A Journey Through the Silver Screen of the 70s
~Many famous movies were made in the 1970s. These include movies that are considered some of the greatest of all time. Check out the top 100 70's movies section, below the brief descriptions of some legendary films.
The Godfather
- The Godfather is known as the number one movie made in seventies (as you would see if you checked the bottom of this page), and, according to rotten tomatoes, the fifth best movie of all time. For those of you who haven't seen The Godfather, this is the plot. Vito Corleone, who rules the criminal world is starting to grow old, so he starts to transfer control of his massive empire to his son, Michael. However, his son is highly reluctant to take control of the empire. One very famous quote from this movies is: "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
The Godfather Part II
- This movie is the second of the Godfather family. However, it isn't a just a sequel to the original godfather movie, it's a prequel as well. I'll explain; it continues on with the story of Michael Corleone as he expands and strengthens his inherited criminal empire, but it also contains a series of flashbacks that show the early life of his father, Vito Corleone.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
- This movie is number three on the list of the best seventies movies. The movie follows the story of a young man who is admitted to a mental institution. While there, he begins to see the head nurse as more of a dictator than a nurse. So, the young man decides to try and rally the other patients to take her on. This movie was originally a novel by Ken Kesey.
Star Wars
- While not everyone today has seen the original 1977 Star Wars movie, I doubt there is any American teenager who has not heard of this movie. This movies tells about a young boy named Luke Skywalker. Skywalker lived "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away", that is ruled by a space empire called "The Empire". Luke befriends an old warrior, a smuggler, a princess, and a group of rebels and attempts to over-through the empire. This movie was such a box office hit that George Lucas, the writer of the film, wrote five more movies to add to this movie's legacy.
Popular Genres of the 1970s
- People in the seventies, loved action/adventure movies. This is shown with movies such as the two Godfather movies and Star Wars, which were some of the biggest hit movies of all time. However, action wasn't the only thing that people liked to watch is the seventies, people enjoyed horror movies such as A Clockwork Orange (#6 on the list) and Alien (#31 on the list). People also enjoyed comedy movies such as the famous movies, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, to name just one.
